In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010) being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time to give my earlier list a complete overhaul. Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the Cloud Ecosystem. I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing. Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

What is Enterprise Cloud Computing?

Jill Tummler Singer on Ulitzer What is enterprise cloud computing? Simply stated, it’s a behind-the-firewalls use of commercial, Internet-based cloud technologies specifically focused on one company’s or one business environment’s computing needs. Enterprise cloud computing is a controlled, internal place that offers the rapid and flexible provisioning of compute power, storage, software, and security services to meet your mission’s demands. It combines the processes of a best in class ITIL organization with the agility of managed, global infrastructure to make your IT faster, better, cheaper, and safer. Enterprise cloud computing gives your business agility, survivability, sustainability, and security. I believe commercial solutions-whether its Google's cloud or Amazon's web services-may be perfect for many companies. But, some corporations and government agencies... (more)

Content Expiration with CloudBerry Explorer

CloudBerry Explorer freeware is a powerful Windows program that helps to manage all aspects of Amazon S3 storage. Many people use Amazon S3 to host their media content or entire websites to offload static content from their web servers, increase scalability or deal with so called TechCrunch effect, when after publishing a review on a popular website such as TechCrunch the number of visitors suddenly jumps tenfold. One of the things that have been successfully employed by professional webmasters to improve scalability and lower the web server load is content caching. Content caching is a directive to the client browser to store a certain file that rarely changes such as image on a local computer. Next time the user requests the same page, the cached content is taken from the local computer rather than requested from the web server. Not only it allows for better user ... (more)

Rackspace Cloud APIs Open Sourced

Cloud Computing on Ulitzer Rackspace Hosting Thursday open sourced the specifications for its Cloud Servers and Cloud Files APIs under the Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution license. It says it worked with developers in an open community to create the specifications and they can now copy, implement and modify the specs, which Rackspace figures should help enable a "truly open cloud." Of course Eucalyptus already offers an open source cloudware. Eucalyptus Systems CTO Rich Wolski said he welcomed Rackspace's decision to provide its client-side tools as open source because it will help achieve cloud interoperability. Rackspace is also making its Cloud Files language bindings for Java, PHP, Python, C# and Ruby available under the MIT license. The source code is up on GitHub, a public software versioning system, at http://github.com/rackspace, where external developers can con... (more)

Immutable Service Containers on Amazon EC2

Cloud Computing on Ulitzer Back in June, we released the very first security hardened virtual machine images for the Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) environment. These original images were based upon the OpenSolaris 2008.11 release and were configured in accordance with the guidelines published by Sun the Center for Internet Security. Since its initial release, we have provided an update to offer this image in the European Region. In August, we took another step forward with the release of a security-enhanced image based upon the OpenSolaris 2009.06 release. This image went beyond just the simple hardening of its predecessor to add functionality such as encrypted swap, non-executable stacks and auditing that was enabled by default. With such a strong foundation, it should have been no surprise that it was likely to be used as a foundation for layere... (more)
